ITINERARY

Day 1: USA/CANADA - OSAKA

International flight to Osaka

Day 2: OSAKA ARRIVAL

Upon arrival at Osaka Airport, make your way to the hotel on your own (airport pick up & drop off service are not included). The second-largest city in Japan, Osaka is known as Tenka no Daidokoro (the Nation’s Kitchen) thanks to its reputation as a culinary mecca. Be sure to sample some local cuisine while you’re here.

*We will do our best to accommodate early arrivals, but hotel check-in is typically available from 3:00 pm. You may arrange baggage storage at the hotel so you’re free to explore unencumbered.

Day 3: OSAKA - NARA - KYOTO

Visit the famed Osaka Castle Garden. Surrounded by greenery, the garden commands a beautiful view of the castle tower and a moat’s stone wall.

Then, enjoy free time in Shinsaibashi, the premier shopping area in Osaka. Around 6.5 football fields long, it’s filled with trendy boutiques, retail chains, and luxury department stores like Daimaru, UniQlo, H&M, Bulgari, and Zara. When your shopping bags are full, cross the street and emerge from the covered arcade into an open area where you’ll see a massive neon sign that reads “Glico.” This is Dotnobori and the sign is Dotonbori’s most iconic landmark, affectionately known as Glico Man. It was originally installed in 1935 as an ad for the Glico candy company (makers of Pocky).

Later, we’ll head to Nara, a city thronged with significant sites, including the largest bronze Buddha statue in the world and the oldest temple in Japan. We’ll begin at Nara Deer Park, home to approximately 1,200 freely roaming deer. Considered in the Shinto religion to be messengers of the gods, Nara’s deer have become a designated “natural treasure” and a symbol of the city. You’ll find deer crackers are for sale around the park and you’re welcome to feed the animals.

In the afternoon drive to Kyoto and visit the Shinto Yasaka Shrine in the Gion district (famous for its geisha culture and tea houses). Originally built during the seventh century, Yasaka-Jinja (“jinja” is the Japanese term for a Shinto shrine) is dedicated to Susanoo, the god of the sea, one of the central deities in Japanese mythology. The shrine is located east of the Gion district, at the end of Shijo-Dori shopping avenue. The Yasaka Shrine is particularly famous for hosting the path of the Gion Matsuri (one of the oldest and grandest traditional festivals in Japan) each July.

Then visit Nakamise Shopping Street, a brightly-colored thoroughfare of food vendors and souvenir stores, which leads to Asakusa Kannon Temple (Senso-Ji), one of Japan’s most important Buddhist sites. Then, we’ll head to the small village of Oshino in the Fuji Five Lakes region to see the scenic Oshino Hakkai, a set of eight ponds which are fed by snowmelt from the slopes of Mount Fuji. The snow makes an 80 year journey down the mountain, filtering through porous layers of lava; the end result is very clear water that you can drink straight from the source.

Finally, we will make our way to Lake Yamanakako, one of the lakes comprising the Fuji Goko, a group of five lakes located around the base of Mt. Fuji. With an expansive area of approximately 2.5 square miles, Lake Yamanakako is the largest among the five and also the closest to the majestic mountain. During our visit, we will embark on a delightful swan-shaped boat cruise, offering picturesque views of Mt. Fuji from the serene waters of the lake.
