Day 10: Kathmandu

Our representative will be at the hotel premises with a vehicle right at the beginning of the day to take you on a city tour of Kathmandu.

Our first destination of the exciting day tour will be the renowned Swayambhunath, affectionately known as the Monkey Temple, owing to the presence of revered monkeys within specific areas of the temple complex. This ancient Buddhist stupa, boasting a remarkable history spanning 2000 years, showcases exquisite architectural features. At its base rests a majestic dome, while above it stands a captivating cubical structure adorned with the eyes of Buddha, casting their gaze in all four cardinal directions. The word "unity" is beautifully inscribed between these eyes in the primary Nepali dialect. Each side of the stupa is adorned with pentagonal Toran, adorned with meticulously carved statues. Rising above the Toran, thirteen tiers ascend, culminating in a serene space crowned by the Gajur.

Following this enriching experience, we will proceed to the vibrant Kathmandu City, the esteemed capital of the Kingdom of Nepal, known also as Kantipur. The city derives its name from the prominent Kasthamandap structure located within Durbar Square, which is believed to have been constructed from the timber of a single tree. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to explore Durbar Square, a historic palace that once served as the seat of the Nepalese Royalty. The complex boasts an impressive array of 50 temples, elegantly distributed across two quadrangles. The outer quadrangle features notable landmarks such as the Kasthamandap, the revered Kumari Ghar (the temple of the Living Goddess), and the magnificent Shiva-Parvati Temple. Meanwhile, the inner quadrangle houses the Hanuman dhoka and the main palace, offering a glimpse into Nepal"s regal past.

After indulging in a delightful lunch at your own pace, we will proceed to the enchanting Patan City. Situated at the heart of Patan, this royal palace complex, constructed during the 17th century under the Malla Kings, exemplifies the splendid Newari architecture of ancient times. Patan City, regarded as a significant Buddhist hub, showcases numerous Buddhist shrines, stupas, and monasteries. The palace itself features three main courtyards, with the central Mul Chowk being the oldest and most revered. To the west of the complex, you will discover a captivating collection of free-standing temples, varying in size and style. Noteworthy among these are the Krishna Temple, widely revered and celebrated on Krishna"s Birthday, the Bhimsen Temple, and the resplendent Golden Temple of Hiranya Varna Mahavira. The Sundari Chowk, which includes the bathing complex of the erstwhile Malla Kings, showcases remarkable architectural excellence and features a sunken bath known as Tusha Hiti, adorned with exquisite wood carvings, stone sculptures, and metalwork. Moreover, Patan Durbar Square houses the esteemed Temple of Taleju Bhawani and boasts an exceptional art museum where a stunning collection of Hindu and Buddhist artifacts are artfully displayed for your admiration.

Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 11: Kathmandu

Our representative will be promptly available at the hotel premises, ready to embark on an immersive city tour of Kathmandu.

We will commence our day by visiting Bhaktapur, a captivating city situated approximately 20 km east of the Kathmandu Valley. Known as the "City of Devotees" and the "City of Culture," Bhaktapur is a living heritage that showcases the rich traditions of the Newar community. With its abundant pagodas and religious shrines, this city holds a significant place along the ancient trade route between India and Tibet. The renowned Durbar Square, adorned with temples and presided over by the Palace of 55 Windows, commissioned by King Bupatindra Malla, awaits your exploration. The Nyatapola Temple, another splendid creation by King Bhupatindra Malla, exemplifies the exquisite Pagoda style, standing gracefully on its five terraces, adorned with captivating figurines symbolizing strength, elegance, and divinity. If time permits, a visit to the Thangka painting museum can be arranged, adding a delightful artistic touch to our experience.

Afterward, we will provide you with some leisure time to relish the flavors of your choice. Subsequently, we will proceed to Bouddhanath Stupa, a sacred site that epitomizes the essence of Tibetan Buddhism. Situated 8 kilometers east of Kathmandu, this magnificent stupa was constructed by King Man Dev of the Licchavi dynasty in the 5th century A.D. Its grandeur is unparalleled, as it stands on a stepped octagonal base, adorned with alcoves depicting Buddha and his profound teachings. Following the Chinese invasion in 1959, Bouddhanath became a sanctuary for thousands of Tibetan refugees, infusing the stupa with renewed spiritual energy. Surrounding the stupa, you will discover various temples, or "gompas," each contributing to the vibrant atmosphere filled with the fragrance of incense and the resonating chants of monks. Bouddhanath Stupa holds a cherished place among pilgrims and tourists alike, serving as a beacon of tranquility and devotion.

Our final stop for the day is the revered Pashupatinath Temple, an iconic religious site renowned as one of the four most significant destinations in Asia for devotees of Lord Shiva. Dedicated to Shiva, the Destroyer, Pashupatinath is considered the holiest Hindu pilgrimage site in Nepal. Although the temple itself was constructed in the fifth century and subsequently renovated by the Malla kings, its sanctity is believed to date back millennia. The pagoda-style temple, resplendent with a gold-plated roof, exquisite wood carvings, and four silver doors, stands as a testament to architectural finesse. Surrounding the main temple, you will encounter other sacred shrines dedicated to various Hindu and Buddhist deities, creating an atmosphere brimming with devotion and reverence. The nearby Guheshwori Temple, honoring Shiva"s consort, Sati Devi, adds to the spiritual aura. As you explore the temple, you will notice the serene Bagmati River flowing behind, its banks adorned with elevated platforms serving as cremation sites for Hindus. Please note that only Hindus are permitted inside the Pashupatinath courtyard. To gain a panoramic view of the temple and its magnificent surroundings, we recommend visiting the hilltop to the east, offering an ideal vantage point for non-Hindu visitors. From this elevated position, you can appreciate the temple"s splendor and the ghats along the Bagmati River, where the deceased are brought for their final rites.
